About the Author

John Eleazer Remsburg was born in Fremont, Ohio on January 7, 1848 to George J. and Sarah A. (Willey) Remsburg. He enlisted in the Union army at the age of sixteen and conducted himself with distinction in the battle of Fort Stevens, receiving a special certificate of commendation from President Abraham Lincoln himself. After the war, Remsburg worked as an educator for fifteen years and a superintendent of education in public instruction in Atkinson County, Kansas, and later wrote several books and delivered over 3,000 lectures on the subject of Freethought. His works were translated into German, French, Bohemian, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Bengali, and Singalese. He died in Porterville, California on September 24, 1919 at the age of 71.
