The late Bertram Baxter's magnum opus commenced in 1977 with a general summary, and ended in 1988 with a volume covering the GNR and GCR. Much of the work for Volume 6 had been done, but his son David, who had painstakingly marshalled his father's data into the original volumes, died before seeing it published. He had been assisted by Peter Mitchell, and he has now completed the work needed to bring this volume to publication.
