About the Author

Dr. Joanne Thanavaro is an associate professor of nursing, the director of the advanced nursing practice programs and the associate dean of graduate nursing education at Saint Louis University School of Nursing. She has been teaching since 1990 in both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Dr. Thanavaro is board certified as an adult gerontology primary care and acute care nurse practitioner. She maintains an active internal medicine practice at Washington University School of Medicine with Washington University Clinical Associates and routinely precepts nurse practitioner students at Grant Medical Clinic. Dr. Thanavaro is a frequent invited presenter at numerous national and international nurse practitioner conferences and serves as a reviewer for a variety of nursing journals. She was among the first cohort of DNPs who because certified as a Diplomat in Comprehensive Care (DCC) awarded by the American Board of Comprehensive care and is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP). She is currently the Department Editor for “Image of the Month” in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Karen S. Moore is an assistant professor and Coordinator of the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at Saint Louis University. She has been teaching since 1997 in bothundergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Her clinical practice has included oncology, infectious disease, acute medicine, hospice, palliative care, occupational health and international traveler's health.Dr. Moore is a Nationally Registered Certified Medical Examiner, member of several state, national and international nursing organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International, American Nurses Association, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (affiliate), American Travel Health Nurses’ Association and the International Society of Travel Medicine. Dr. Moorecurrently serves as a reviewer for nurse practitioner and nurse educator journals and has presented as an invited speaker at regional and national nurse practitioner conferences.
