As a grave witch, Alex Craft can speak to the dead-she's even on good terms with Death himself. As a consultant for the police, she's seen a lot of dark magic, but nothing has prepared her for her latest case. When she's raising a "shade" involved in a high profile murder, it attacks her, and then someone makes an attempt on her life. Someone really doesn't want her to know what the dead have to say, and she'll have to work with mysterious homicide detective Falin Andrews to figure out why...
An exciting new entry to the urban fantasy genre. (Yes, I'm going with urban fantasy over paranormal romance, it has more of that gritty urban feel). Alex Craft can raise 'shades', the memories of the dead, as closure for loved ones; to settle wills; to catch their killers. But when a shade tries to kill her, her job gets a little weirder. Enter Falin Andrews, a mysterious new homicide detective who is unimpressed with Alex's hack magical talents, but seems to pop up inexplicably, as though he is hiding magic of his own...
The relationship that develops between Alex and Andrews was fairly obvious from the start, but the ending may just surprise you. And the visitations from Death and the mystery of who he really is, is an interesting sideline.
I'm awaiting the sequel, 'Grave Dance', due out mid-2011.
