Reviews

Gr 5-8-This adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's adventure classic is performed in Radio Theatre Style. Thanks to impressive although sometimes overwhelming sound effects, this abridged presentation creates a you-are-there feeling for listeners. The story chronicles the adventures and strife of David Balfour, a 16-year-old Scottish boy living in 1751. David's father dies, forcing the young hero to contact his horrible Uncle Ebenezer, a gruff swindler (beautifully performed), who tries to kill David and then has him kidnapped. The sound effects enhance the action for the most part: Ebenezer's chambers echo; rain, wind, and thunder add to the story's dread. Unfortunately, some of the actors have trouble with their Scottish accents and some of the line deliveries could have been less rushed. The music used in the production is quite good. However, at times the sound effects almost overwhelm the actors; for example, the sound of feet crunching gravel as two characters walk is a bit overdone. Still, for kids interested in drama or radio theatre, this version of the classic certainly moves quickly and offers several exciting, well-produced moments.-Brian E.
