About the Author

Than Htun (Dedaye) was born in 1949 to a jeweller family in Dedaye. He finished the state high school education in 1967 whilst training as an apprentice in a goldsmith's workshop during the school breaks. In 1969 he was held in Insein jail for twenty months because of participating in the university student demonstrations against the government. He obtained a geology degree in 1973 from the Rangoon Arts and Science university. An avid collector of Myanmar coins, he is the author of Auspicious Symbols and Ancient Coins of Myanmar. During the political crisis of 1988, he joined the NLD party and was elected as a member of parliament for Dedaye township in the 1990 general election. While having a break from politics, he opened a small art gallery named 'Heritage Gallery' in Bogyoke Market, Yangon.
