What would you do if you knew there was a lion in the meadow, but your mother wouldn't believe you and gave you a matchbox with a dragon to scare the away the lion...and in fact the dragon was there too?
this is a wonderful book. my preschoolers really love it and it shows that imagination is a wonderful tool to have. The pictures are wonderful and colourful and boy wouldnt we all love to be that child chasing away the lion with our own wee dragon. Recommend for children 3 -10yrs.
A Margaret Mahy treasure! My little one has spent many hours acting out this book ever since first reading it. The illustrations are so similar to her own experience that we are still looking for lions...friendly ones...who eat apples...and get scared away by dragons ;)

I love this story where there is an imaginary lion and an imaginary dragon. My little one loves the wonderful illustrations with lots of detail which are good for conversation. A book my child loves to have read over and over.
This is a wonderful, classic children's story by an amazing New Zealand author that blures the lines between imagination and reality wonderfully. The young boy tells his mother there's a lion in the meadow and when she plays along to help the boy get rid of the lion, she unwittingly gives him a dragon! Luckily, the boy discovers that the lion is actually his friend and the dragon is quite happy where he is and won't create any trouble after all...
