Gr 4-6-What begins as a family ski vacation at a Colorado resort ends as a life-and-death situation for 11-year-old Jarod and his 8-year-old sister, Jennifer. Continuously confronted by a bully whom Jarod knows from a previous school, they escape the taunting by veering beyond the safe ski zone. Jarod is in his glory with all of the untouched snow. Tragedy strikes when an avalanche is triggered and Jarod is buried. The children's struggle to survive begins with Jennifer uncovering Jarod, the two building a snow shelter, and, eventually, the girl leaving her brother to summon help. At times, the characters seem much older than their stated ages in their reactions and conversations. The dialogue seems stilted at times and problems are worked out a little too quickly or easily in a few instances. Suspense does build as readers wonder if the two will find a way to safety. Survival techniques are effectively woven into the plot. The story has enough adventure and tension to make it an additional purchase for paperback collections.-Cheryl Cufari, Glencliff Elementary School, Niskayuna, NY Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
