About the Author

John Ambury, a prize-winning poet in high school, returned to creative writing in 2009 after a hiatus of more than 50 years. His output is eclectic: by turns experiential and existential, descriptive and interpretive, philosophical and whimsical. While always thoughtful, it is accessible rather than obscure. In form it ranges from Elizabethan sonnets through rhyming couplets, linked rhyme and haiku to free verse (currently his form of choice). He is experimenting with short story writing. His poems have been published in numerous anthologies and periodicals; this is his first solo collection. John is associated with The Ontario Poetry Society (Executive), the Writers and Editors Network (former Board member), the League of Canadian Poets (Associate), the Canadian Federation of Poets, the Courtneypark Literary Circle, the Oakville Literary Alliance (Lit Café), and 100,000 Poets for Change (former Committee member). He is a frequent reader at Ontario poetry events, from London to Oakville to Oshawa. He freelances as a proofreader, editor and book reviewer, and has been a poetry contest judge. A retired printing ink technician, technical writer, and chemical sales representative, John holds a Professional Grade in the Oil & Colour Chemists' Association. He is currently (as well as a writer) a small-business owner, a travelling technical speaker, a part-time professional actor, and an enthusiastic amateur curler. John is a native of Alberta, a former Kingstonian, and a long-time resident of Toronto. Cheryl Antao-Xavier has over 25 years' experience in proofreading and editing poetry, fiction and non-fiction. She has worked as proofreader for Maclean Hunter Printing; editor with Carswell legal publishers, Oxford University Press, CNIB, and In Our Words Inc. She proofreads and edits on a freelance basis online, and can be reached at inourwords@bell.net.

Reviews

I was captivated by the variety, depth and sincerity of this laudable collection. I hope all lovers of good reads will partake of this feast. - Reva Leah Stern: writer and editor; TV & Stage director, designer and producer. Ambury's mastery of various styles can be seen in the iambic pentameter of "Passion's Fire," in the raw, unrhymed power of "Trial By Fire," and in the laugh-out-loud whimsy of a haiku like "Desire." - Max Layton: poet, song-writer, performer John Ambury's book, Moving Waters, won me over in no time. His writing is confident, substantial, and very effective. You will indeed read these poems again; you will find the emotions, you will hear the music. - Barry Clegg, poet John Ambury has delved deeply into life's ambiguities. [He] never loses sight of his stated intention of having his poems accessible: that is to say, readable and comprehensible, and to which this reviewer can add, immensely enjoyable. - Jake Hogeterp: novelist (On Cloud Nine), poet, editor, translator. Moving Waters is the perfect testament to John Ambury's long-standing position and influence in the GTA's lit scene. - Brandon Pitts: author and poet (Tender in the Age of Fury, Pressure to Sing); playwright (Killcreek). John talks about getting "past the words" to enjoy poetry. I'm reminded of the American poet Billy Collins. I recommend this collection to would-be writers as well as readers of poetry. - Jack Livesley: poet, essayist, teacher, broadcaster. John Ambury's poetry will make you think at a deeper level of consciousness. He delves into the complexities of love. [They] are described as being "complex," "interwoven" and "inseparable," like water. His poetry will inspire you to write poetry. - Maria Pia Marchelletta: President, Writers and Editors Network Moving Waters are a study in precision-crafting of poetic form, vision and expression. A delight for novice or seasoned poet.-Cheryl Antao-Xavier, poet, author, editor and publisher.
