About the Author

Ronald Norcott Callander was born in the Mallee region of Victoria, Australia, in 1933. After serving in the Australian Regular Army as a lieutenant during the Korean War, he became a colonial police officer in Tanganyika, East Africa in the lead-up to that country’s independence. Apart from being a professional soldier and a policeman, Callander has worked as a laboratory assistant, library technician, salesman, advertising manager and export executive, living and working in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. He is author of a novel, MacArthur’s Pyjamas (Seaview Press, 2007) and has written articles, stories and verse for newspapers, magazines and literary journals, as well as successful television drama and comedy scripts; Among other credits, he has won the Henry Lawson Prose Award and the Northern Territory Literary Award. He has served on the committees of both the Australian Writers’ Guild and the Fellowship of Australian Writers. Still active—he is a radio operator with Volunteer Marine Rescue—Callander lives in coastal Queensland with his English-born wife Joan whom he met and married in Tanganyika.

Reviews

"Callander's intent exactness is very compelling. All his characters spring to life in a few strokes. He has economy of means, and his prose is exact and controlled." -Dr Barrett Reid, Australian Literature Boar.
