About the Author

Dr. Si Li holds a Ph.D. from Wuhan University in natural Religion. He teaches American literature in the School of Foreign Studies, issues in Ethics and other public humanity courses at Wuhan University of Technology. Author's Abstract: Identifying someone with a mystic, or defining mystical experiences can be challenging as the two characteristic features of mysticism the ineffability and the sense of oneness with the divine, do not reconcile with verbal communications in most mystics if we avoid being paradoxical. In a Chinese poet and idealist like Haizi, however, the biographical and textual evidences makes him an exception. Going from a Misty poetry to a Christian mystic, the transformation of Haizi was the result of religious and cultural influences - Taoism (in the form of his qigong practice), Tibetan Buddhism and Christianity. While his continuous frustrations with women triggered his diversion from the beaten track of average young college teachers in particular, and the Misty poets and the Third Generation writers in general in the 1980s, the Sun: Seven books and his lyrical works reveal his nature as a Christian mystic. The growing aversion to his own atheist culture and the desperate embrace of Christian values singled him out as an insightful romanticist poet of poetic drama and a unique rebel in a chaotic era.

Reviews

"To students studying the literary history of contemporary China, to scholars looking into the finer niches of the cultural and religious complexities of modem China, this reinterpretation is a must... this risky, challenging but insightful exploration into Haizi's dark world of life and works makesLi's reinterpretation of the biographical and textual analyses especially valuable and beneficial". Dr Lin Zhao, Professor of Western Philosophy, Wuhan University. "Li's specific contribution to scholarship of literary criticism here in China is to have overset the prevalent pattern of criticism of Haizi and his poetry by offering a revolutionary perspective of religious and cultural considerations". Dr. Yingliang Liu, Associate Professor of English, Wuhan University of Technology.
