About the Author

The son of naval officer and grandson of an army officer, Brigadier Stuart Middleton followed in the footsteps of his family, serving in the army for 37 years. A graduate of the Army Staff College and a Chartered Engineer, he attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in December 1967. Throughout his extensive career he gained vast experience including service with the British Army of the Rhine, a spell with the US Army in Washington and assignments dealing with the integration of the work of the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. At the military science college, Shrivenham, Stuart initially studied aero-mechanical engineering, and later in his career became closely involved with equipment and procurement programmes, which involved a wide range of advanced technology. This included the selection, introduction and use of different equipment, along with its ongoing modification in light of combat performance. Upon leaving the Army, Stuart spent six years as Director of Transport for the Metropolitan Police, directing the supply, maintenance and disposal of its vehicles and boats. Throughout his career Stuart has written on a large number of Defence and security topics, usually for confidential internal purposes, and now welcomes the chance to pass on his experience about the world of defence, using publicly available material. In his spare time he can be found painting watercolours.
