Promotional Information

A memoir that offers a glimpse of late Imperial life. Ranging from General Gordon's Siege of Khartoum to the Boxer Uprising, the Boer War and World War One, it presents a record of the intersection of the lives of a single British family with the drama of world affairs.

About the Author

Francis Robin Houssemayne Du Boulay (1920-2008) was Professor of Medieval History at the University of London and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1980. His publications include 'Germany in the Later Middle Ages', 'An Age of Ambition' and 'The England of Piers Plowman'.

Reviews

'The lives of the Du Boulay children embraced many aspects of empire - government and military service, missionary work and settlement in India, the Middle East and Africa. This excellent book opens a window on what the empire meant to men and women of an English middle class family.' - Francis Robinson, Professor of the History of South Asia, Royal Holloway College, University of London
