Reviews

I thoroughly recommend it.A" The Rt Hon William Hague MP, author of William Wilberforce As the Church of England becomes more evangelical during a period of great cultural change Richard Turnbull resurrects the relevance of the life of Lord Shaftesbury who, during an equally turbulent period, lived the inextricable link between personal faith and social action..A" Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool Few statesmen have served the poor and marginalized in their day more than Lord Shaftesbury. In this accessible biography, Richard Turnbull shows us what he achieved and why.A" David Bebbington, Professor of History, Stirling University This is a superb biography. Richard Turnbull's riveting narrative provides powerful insights into the mixture of aristocratic paternalism, political tenacity and spiritual conviction that produced a great reforming statesman.A" Jonathan Aitken, author broadcaster, and former Cabinet Minister
