Before coming to the University of Tennessee, Joan Cronan was the Women’s Athletics Director for the College of Charleston for ten years. She has served as president of NACWAA, as a member of the NCAA’s Executive Committee and Management Council, and as a member of the NCAA Championship Cabinet.
"Joan and Pat Summitt were what I call 'glass cutters' in building
the Tennessee women's athletics program. They did not break the
glass ceiling; they carefully carved their way through." --Sally
Jenkins, Washington Post "Joan has the ability to bring out the
best in people and provide them with the skills to be the best that
they can be. It's refreshing that despite all her vast
accomplishments Joan remains humble and sincere." --Robin Roberts,
co-anchor, Good Morning America "Whether you're in the board room
or the the locker room, there is nothing more important than
teamwork. Joan Cronan is a gifted leader of teams, whose passion
and devotion has led generations of athletes to be the very best
that they can be. Her learning and experience can be a hugely
valuable lesson to us all." --Kenneth W. Lowe, Chairman, President,
and CEO, Scripps Networks Interactive
"Joan's vision, passion, and tireless efforts to grow women's
athletics and to promote women's opportunities have made a huge
difference across the nation for women in sports. Joan was a
driving force in elevating the prominence and brand of Tennessee
Lady Vol athletics through strategy, excellence, and priceless
relationships." --Pat Summitt, legendary Lady Vols basketball
coach
"It has been my privilege to observe Joan's leadership skills and
to work alongside her in numerous civic endeavors over the years.
To put it simply, Joan is a type of person who gets things done
because people want to do things with her. During her years as the
University of Tennessee Women's Athletic Director, and in the time
since she has retired, I have watched as people have repeatedly
sought her out for advice, assistance, and encouragement. And we've
had a lot of laughs along the way." --Governor Bill Haslam
