F A Hayek (1899-1992) was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974 and the Medal of Freedom in 1991 and was one of the leading Austrian economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century.
F. A. Hayek, awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences
in 1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory and one of the principal
proponents of the libertarian philosophy. This collection of 15 of
his essays captures Hayek's views on political economy and economic
history expressed in the writings of Mandeville, Hume, Cantillon,
Adam Smith, and Henry Thornton. The essays, supplemented by
editorial notes, provide an introduction to the historical context
of political economy in Britain and the evolution of monetary
practices. Five of the essays had never been published, and two
others had never been available in English, when the first printing
of the book was published in 1991.
