Reviews

'Shahadat Hossain's book makes an important contribution to the understanding and analysis of the phenomenon of urban slums and new forms of urban poverty in the South. It is based on extensive empirical case studies of slum neighbourhoods, and provides insights into the daily lives of the urban poor, and also the material, social and emotional resources upon which their resilience is based. Here Hossain extends sociological and anthropological knowledge on poverty in the context of the formation of megacities and addresses the existing gap in urban poverty research.' - Professor Michael Humphrey, Chair of Sociology, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, The University of Sydney; 'This book offers an original and important contribution to the literature on urban poverty in the south. Combining perspectives from anthropology and political economy, this study provides detailed analysis of the social conditions of poverty in Dhaka, identifying divergent root causes both in social relationships and in the politic-economic context of the Bangladeshi state. This book contributes to both the conceptual/theoretical and policy related debates on the fate of the urban poor in the megacities and hypercities of the South.' - Dr Claudia Tazreiter, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, The University of New South Wales, Sydney
