David Hodgson is a training consultant and author who works with teachers and students across the UK and abroad. He has written a number of books to help teachers and students thrive in the classroom and beyond.
What Else Can a Teacher Do? is an interesting and reassuring book
which considers the common issues that teachers (and other people)
face during their careers. As a careers adviser myself I have
spoken to many teachers who face and suffer the same issues, and I
especially enjoyed the book's inclusion of comments from other
people about their own experiences. The job profiles section is
useful and gives readers the opportunity to consider themselves in
other roles.Paul Clifton, careers adviser
Current evidence shows an increase in the number of teachers, of
all age groups, becoming disenchanted and disillusioned with
teaching for a wide range of reasons. In addition, recruitment to
teacher training courses is failing to meet target figures and
difficulties in filling posts for headteachers at all levels are
causing concern in both local authority and academy trust sectors.
. In addressing these issues, David Hodgson has produced an
absorbing and supportive text to enable teachers who are
aexperiencing difficultiesa to re-focus their mindseta to move
forward more successfully. A key feature of the book is the section
on awhere you are nowa, which guides the reader to re-focus their
energies by self analysis, on the positives as well as the
negatives of their current situation. The focus on the work of Paul
Dolan on ahow to be happiera is an excellent example of strategies
promoting self analysis and self support evident within the text. A
major part of the text is focussed on practical guidance for
teachers who have become disillusioned, dissatisfied and frustrated
in their current role and the range of options which might be
available. The text enables the reader to explore, with guidance, a
vast range of options to use their personal skills and experience
more effectively, to regain control of satisfaction from their
working life. This book should be available within all staff rooms
to re-kindle ajob enthusiasm and satisfactiona for all staff

Ideal for teachers feeling a bit dissatisfied with life and
wondering where to start to change it, What Else Can a Teacher Do?
offers fresh perspectives on reviewing where you're currently at
and for thinking about yourself and your own needs (something we
often find hard to do). The information provided on career
opportunities is comprehensive, but it is the contemplation section
which makes it stand out and makes it a worthwhile purchase. An
interesting, thought-provoking read.Gordon Collins, owner, Gordon
Collins Careers and Education Services
What a great read! What Else Can a Teacher Do? should be read not
only by all teachers who want a change, but also by all school
leavers a including my 17-year-old daughter! Kate Marnoch, Head
Teacher, Kingsdown Nursery School, founding member, Lincolnshire
