Performer Notes
  • Disco Inferno includes: Ian Crause (vocals, guitar); Daniel Gish (keyboards); Pal Willmott (bass); Rob Whatley (drums).
  • Between 1991 and 1994, "post-rock" was the buzzword among critics. This controversial category was originally reserved for bands that dared sidestep rock & roll convention by embracing the possibilities of digital technology. As the definition blurred, post-rock's ranks became cluttered, and the coinage fell out of favor. Regardless, Disco Inferno deserves the distinction.
  • Incited by the Bomb Squad's sample-glutted productions for Public Enemy, Disco Inferno devised an ingenious system where guitars triggered a MIDI-based sampling system. Samples could now be effortlessly integrated into the very fabric of the band's post-punk sound. DISCO INFERNO GO POP is a fantastic, uncompromising example of the band's genius. Tangles of samples and digitized voice fill in the spaces where guitars once chimed ("New Clothes"). Sound effects drive songs to astonishing narrative effect ("In Sharky Water," "Even the Sea," "Footprints in Snow"). Barrages of samples back each chord change, leading to dizzying, spectacularly surreal sonic overload ("A Crash at Every Speed," "Starbound"). Frontman Ian Crause is a masterful lyricist, though his witty words are often all but buried by the sampladelic blizzards. An important album, POP ranks with My Bloody Valentine's LOVELESS and Bark Psychosis' HEX as a definitive achievement of its day.
Professional Reviews
Alternative Press (1/95, p.53) - "...this uncheerful British trio are forging challenging music that threatens to break free of rock's shackles....This frigid, melancholy music bristles with a contrary adventurousness. Amazing stuff that will sadly hit too few ears..."
