Phil Dunn was Museum Registrar at the People's History Museum in
Manchester for over 20 years. As a curator of the museum's research
collections and public displays he acquired an extensive knowledge
of early trade unions and their banners, radical British politics,
and the visual culture and ideologies of the broad left.
Born in Dalkeith, Scotland, his degree in Modern History at
Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology included a two year
specialism in Labour history studies. This, combined with his
knowledge of the museum's banner, poster and photograph
collections, provided him with valuable insights into UK Communism,
the Labour Party 1901-1984, late 20th century political protest,
and revolutionary Marxism. Similarly, his observations on the
growth of Neo-Marxist Critical Theory in museum culture and in UK
museum training courses and publications revealed to him the new
liberal left orthodoxy that had become established in Britain's
museum and arts sectors.
Following retirement in 2014, he put versifying aside -- his main
interest -- and set about writing and selecting the diverse
material for this book, all the time looking for new angles,
invective and humour. He hopes to return to the writing of verse
and poetry before too long.
'For anyone searching for a humorous antidote to the politically anodyne, the necessary antithesis to the liberal thesis, look no further as Philip Dunn's witty and trenchant book has arrived. This delightful volume is a much-needed slap in the faces of the presumptive progressives and social justice warriors that dominate our airwaves and universities. Dunn's work is an honest and effective tool in the Right's ever-growing arsenal of sarcastic and satirical counter-responses to the politically correct shibboleths of our age.' -- Will Franken, libertarian conservative comedian; 'Much needed light relief! If you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?' Gisela Stuart, Labour MP Birmingham Edgbaston, 2016; 'An amusing and witty guide to British history' Jeremy Black, historian; 'For the last thirty years the left has held sway in the education system and the entertainment industry. Luckily the backlash has begun -- the Brexit vote was a powerful indicator. This coruscating volume is evidence of the turning tide - the left's self-important celebrities are now themselves the butt of satire.' -- Michael Blackburn, writer, poet, and lecturer.;'The Left take themselves very seriously and that is the funniest thing about them. But because the comedy gate-keepers - from the BBC to the Comedy Store - are also true believers too, the Left never gets the rinsing it deserves. Until now. This clever and witty compilation of 'take downs' of Leftism leaves no leftie shibboleth intact. It's a must buy for Christmas if you want to LOL at the Left' -- Kathy Gyngell, Conservative Woman.
