Reviews

From 2002 to 2007, archaeologist, historian, and writer Mojsov researched and documented objects from the latest archaeological excavations in the National Museum and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt. Here she describes the city during the two centuries it was ruled by Christians. After an initial chapter reviewing the history from its founding by Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC, she discusses Christianity in Egypt, Hypatia and St. Catherine, Heraclius' crusade, the First Inquisition, Arabs at the gates, the fall of Babylon, Alexandria won, the mirror of Pharos, and Alexandria lost. Photographs of artifacts help her tell the story, most striking a series of portraits painted on wood.
