Gil Gilpatrick has been a Master Maine Guide for over 40 years and taught Outdoor Resources at the Skowhegan Vocational Center in Maine for nearly 30 years. He has written extensively about his experiences in the outdoors and his knowledge of how to build outdoor equipment.
About ten years ago I came across someone making snowshoes using
your book. I ordered a copy and built several pair which my much
older children are still using. Last fall I glanced at your website
again and noticed your books on the Allagash. Many years ago
several friends had canoed the area but I never made the trip. The
books and map went to the top of my Christmas wish list and made
great winter reading! This spring my now 20 year old son lined up a
summer job that gave him the last two weeks of August off before
going back to college. My first question to him was, 'Do you want
to take a week and canoe in Maine?' We just returned from a seven
day trip from Eagle Lake to Allagash village! The wind was out of
the south on all the lakes, it only rained when we were in camp,
and we had just enough water to get through the lower portion of
the river! What more could you ask for............ I would not have
attempted the trip without the use of your well written books. With
the books I had a great idea of what to expect and was fully
prepared. Thanks ........... Your books provided the impetus to
make the trip with my son.
Just a note to say thanks. I purchased your Allagash Guide package
last year and just got back from my first AWW trip. Your guide was
indispensable and was referenced throughout the trip. We started at
Chamberlain Bridge and ended in Allagash Village. We used your
recommendation for shuttle service and found Norman to be
accommodating and efficient. I would definitely recommend your book
to anyone planning to do the trip.
