Dr. Maida Mascorro was born and raised in Starr County, in the town
of Roma, 3rd youngest of 11 children that were raised by immigrant
parents, who early on instilled in their children to be loving,
respectful, and above all, to never forget their roots.
She received her PhD in Counseling Psychology from Walden
University in 2002. Dr. Mascorro is a member of Psi Chi Honor
Society and currently holds state and national counseling
professional licenses in her native Texas as well as in Nevada.
She graduated Salutatorian from her High School in 1976. She
coached basketball and track for 1 year in Starr county, and earned
the title of "Coach of the Year" in the school district for helping
her student's achieve a perfect record in basketball.
Dr. Mascorro received a Master of Science degree from Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi and she studied biology at the University of
Texas at Austin before graduating from CSU, Los Angeles with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-Television-Film Journalism.
While attending UC Berkeley for one summer, Dr. Mascorro was
involved in UNICEF research in Rio de Janeiro on "meninos de rua"
(children of the streets). Dr. Mascorro was also involved in the
National Health Service Corp, where she was both an ambassador and
a mental health provider in a low income and shortage area.
In the early days of her youth, she was a migrant farm worker who,
along with her family, picked grapes, strawberries, peaches,
cucumbers, and watermelon. Later, she taught life sciences for 10
years at the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also taught
ESL to immigrants from South America, Mexico, and Asia, part-time
in the evenings, prior to becoming a professional counselor.
Being an adventurer at heart, Dr. Mascorro has enjoyed parasailing,
white water rafting, skiing, running up to the Hollywood Sign,
running in the Amazon Jungle, sitting atop Bob Marley's favorite
rock in his hometown, and of course taking in the historic sights
and gourmet foods of Europe.
Dr. Mascorro has been a counselor for 20 years, and practices in
McAllen, Texas, as her duty to God directs her. There, she lives
with her big Akita dog "Dallas." Even now, as she practices the
healing art of counseling, her goal is to continue writing to
enlighten her readers, as well as to continue to open her own eyes
to the many promises that this wonderful life holds!
