This book covers all of the BGE Benchmarks for Mathematics and
Numeracy at Third Level. It is colourful and inviting, striking a
good balance between text and diagrams. Each chapter includes a
short introduction, a selection of worked examples and plenty of
questions and fun activities to be tackled by the learner. A
check-up exercise concludes the chapter and answers are available
at the back of the book.
One of the key strengths of this book is the way in which methods
and worked examples are communicated. A great deal of thought has
clearly gone into choosing appropriate examples and clear, concise
explanations. It is obvious that the authors are familiar with the
needs of pupils in the BGE phase. Consequently, this book would be
equally suited for use both in a classroom environment and,
possibly more important now than ever, as a tool for home
learning.
Each exercise strikes a careful balance between an appropriate
amount of core practice and more challenging questions to extend
the more able student. For instance, the section on 'evaluating
expressions' builds up learners' skills in the basics of
substitution before challenging them with a selection of code
breaking activities, matching equivalent expressions and even a
substitution crossword.
Also available to purchase for a one-off fee of £85 plus VAT is the
downloadable Planning and Assessment Pack, containing teaching
notes, homework exercises and assessments for each chapter as well
as block tests and a whole course assessment.
This book is an outstanding resource for all pupils studying Third
Level Mathematics and I would not hesitate to recommend it to
pupil, parent or teacher. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity
to utilise this resource with my own classes.
