"This comprehensive encyclopedia provides personal and professional
background on 444 American and Canadian naturalists, explorers,
conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists, scientists,
writers, and artists from the late [15th] century through the
present. The editors are professional historians and professors who
have placed each subject within the framework of the evolution of
environmental science, from early exploration to current
governmental regulation. Concise, clear, and unbiased, the entries
average two pages and very clearly outline biographical
information, professional and career accomplishments, and major
contributions. The entries can be used by readers of all
ages....There are no comparable reference books on this topic that
have the scope of this dictionary. Worth every penny, it is one of
the best reference books of the year...Highly recommended for most
public and academic libraries."-Library Journal
"This new dictionary, compiled by editors with expertise in the
science, history, social-science, humanities, and English subject
areas, contains professional and personal information about a
representative selection of the many American and Canadian
environmentalists and naturalists who...by their individual and
varied activities, contributed in a profound way to the present
body of knowledge about the U.S. and Canada....[Here] are found a
group of men and women whose dedication, quest for knowledge and,
in many cases, unconcerned for their own well-being are reflected
in the details of their biographies. Subjects also include
writers--from academics to newspapermen--educators, medical
practitioners, lawyers, inventors, and deep-sea divers, fur
trappers, and more. Their life stories provide fascinating reading
as well as a rich source of social, economic, and political
research material for students in all of these subject areas.
Recommended for university, high-school and public
libraries."-Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin
