The author, now in retirement, studied English urban history at Leicester University and was an archivist in the Essex Record Office for 35 years, during which time he gained a deep knowledge of the Maldon borough archives and other records relating to the town. He is an experienced writer and editor, and his many published works include The Speckled Monster: smallpox in England, 1670-1970, with special reference to Essex, 1987.
