Reviews

Once thought to be a rare illness of childhood, celiac disease is now recognized as an autoimmune disorder that affects an estimated two million Americans (adults and kids). The culprit is gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains, which triggers damage to the digestive system. Green (director, Celiac Disease Ctr., Columbia Univ.) and science writer Jones offer useful, in-depth information for sufferers. Because the only treatment is removing gluten from the diet, seven of the 24 chapters are devoted to diet (e.g., foods that contain gluten, eliminating gluten, reading labels, cooking, and eating out). There are also appendixes on print and web resources and a list of gluten-free product manufacturers. This book is important for consumer health libraries and consumer health collections in public libraries.-Marge Kars, Bronson Methodist Hosp., Kalamazoo, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
