The Child, the Family, and the Outside World

Beginning at the natural bond between mother and child - the bond we call love, which is the key to personality - Dr Winnicot deals in turn in this volume with the phases of mother/infant, parent/child, and child/school. From the problems - which are not really problems - of feeding, weaning and innate morality in babies, he ranges to the difficulties of only children, of stealing and lying and of first experiments in independence. Shyness, sex education in schools and the roots of aggression are among the many other topics the author covers.

About the Author

D.W. Winnicott (1896-1971) was the first paediatrician in Britain to train as a psychoanalyst. In over forty years of clinical practice at the Paddington Green Children's Hospital, he brought unprecedented skill to the relatively new discipline of the psychoanalysis of children. His work is increasingly being regarded as one of the most influential contributions to psychoanalysis since Freud.
