Noel Streatfeild was born in Sussex. She attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts and travelled the world as an actress. During the war she joined the Women's Voluntary Services. A prolific author of books for both adults and children, her writing career spanned forty years. She won the Carnegie Medal at the start of it, and received the OBE in 1983. Clarke Hutton was a well-known 20th Century illustrator and engraver. His work is represented in Tate Britain.
