Jack Zipes is a preeminent fairy-tale scholar who has written, translated, and edited dozens of books, including The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm and Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde. He is a professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota.
Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938) is best known for creating the world-famous rag doll characters, Raggedy Ann and Andy. While the Raggedys were indisputably the centerpiece of Gruelle's career, in his heart of hearts, Johnny was a dyed-in-the-wool freelance artist, who felt most at home at his drawing board, crafting illustrations and features for newspapers and magazines.
"Splendid."
--Faith McNulty, The New Yorker "Clearly the text of choice for any
reader...Zipes' edition deserves to become the standard
translation."
