A serious effort by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. to define and evaluate the core competencies thought to be both necessary and sufficient for certified psychiatrists to possess. The competencies are modeled after the six competencies recommended by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). While the major focus of the book is the processes leading to initial certification, discussion of the competencies and their evaluation in practicing psychiatrists as they participate in the Maintenance of Certification (c) Program of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is also discussed in detail.
