Dudley Pope (1927-1997) joined the merchant navy when he was sixteen. He was wounded in the Battle of the Atlantic, and went on to write The Black Ship and other naval literature.
Though Pope usually offers fictional accounts of great sea skirmishes, he proves he really knows his stuff with this 1959 history of the 1805 battle between the British and French fleets off the Trafalgar coast. This nicely details the roles of both the officers and the seamen and their daily life aboard ship. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
