Mighty Adventures is a children's book written in rhyme by R.C.
Wittig (formerly published as Rebecca C. Guerrero) and illustrated
by Andrew Miller. Three-year-old Desmond celebrates his birthday
with his parents, but is disheartened to receive a soft teddy bear
as a birthday gift, as it is not tough enough. As Desmond goes to
his bedroom to sulk, Teddy jumps up, filled with excitement, and
runs past him. When Desmond gives chase, both he and Teddy are
greeted by an amazing forest where Desmond's bedroom used to be.
Surrounded by forest animals, Desmond's feeling of toughness
reaches its peak when a lion appears and roars loudly. Desmond
throws a ball to the lion, quickly transforming its demeanor into
that of a playful kitten. Sneaking down the hall to the bathroom,
Desmond and Teddy see a pirate ship where the bathtub had once
been. Aboard the ship, they find beautiful treasures and gold. When
angry pirates confront them both, Desmond and Teddy team up and
capture the pirates in their own nets. Running down the hallway,
they enter the basement and find a dragon sleeping where Desmond's
bike is usually parked. They escape the sleeping dragon and meet
Desmond's parents back in the kitchen, where his birthday cake
awaits. Desmond decides that his teddy bear is the best present he
could have ever possibly received.
R.C. Wittig's wonderful story of a child who uses his imagination
to play the most fun games inside his home was an absolute delight
to read. With each scenario imagined, Desmond feels more and more
tough, but also learns that there are times when you should retreat
rather than fight. A young child's imagination is a gift which
should be nurtured and encouraged. As a child, I recall the
numerous games played outdoors while using my imagination, yet
today's generation spend too much time at the television, computer,
or playing games on their digital devices. Teaching a child at a
very young age how to use their imagination is priceless. I very
much enjoyed Desmond and His Mighty Adventures and feel this book
would be ideally stocked in libraries, day care centers, and in
home libraries to be read to children at bed time. The
illustrations are bright, colorful, and complement the story
beautifully.
