Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998) was a novelist, poet, man of letters and one of China's most outstanding scholars and was seen by many in his country as the last link in an unbroken chain of geniuses stretching back to Confucius.
The author's 1947 comedic novel opens as the first shots in the second Sino-Japanese War are being fired, with protagonist Fang Hung-Chien returning to Shanghai. Although his education consists primarily of a fake degree from a nonexistent American university, Fang lands a teaching position, which offers Qian the opportunity to spoof academic pseudointellectuals.
