About the Author

A New Mexico native and graduate of University of New Mexico, Kate taught secondary education in New Jersey and New Mexico schools. She served for ten years as Education Director for Animal Humane Association New Mexico and Watermelon Mountain Ranch No Kill Shelter. Travelling the state with her assortment of performing blind and deaf dogs, she delivered her award-winning K-12 curriculums, You and Your Pet Are Forever to thousands of classrooms. Kate's recent writings have also appeared in various publications, including Bosque Beast, Petroglyphs, Pug News, DWAA Ruff Drafts as well as in More Voices New Mexico, third edition. Her recent book, Our Most Treasured Tails, Sixty Years of Pet Rescue, was awarded the Maxwell Medallion by Dog Writers' Association of America for 2014 Best Book. It was also a Best Books USA finalist, and four-category finalist in NM-AZ 2014 Book Awards and received a five-star read from Readers' Favorite. After her book was honored by a 2015 New Mexico Legislature ceremony, she and her husband, Wally, and her families were recognized for their selfless efforts in rescuing New Mexico pets for more than a century. She asks her readers to examine their own pet experiences and explore how to best use their resources and energies to fight animal cruelty by holding our legislators responsible for their votes on animal issues. In this book she asks her readers to unite two of their government resources to form an interagency animal cruelty task force. The underlying theme of all of Kate's writings is, "We can make a difference."

"Our highly successful animal cruelty task force is a model for any size law enforcement agency and has proven to restore trust and confidence with law enforcement, educate citizens on animal care, and better solve community based problems. It continues each year to save the lives of hundreds of our abused and neglected pets." - Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales "Each remarkable individual of our highly successful Bernalillo County Animal Cruelty Task Force will never forget their rewarding experience with the hundreds of animals we encountered; and those animals whose lives we saved will never forget the kindness of our team members. This is our story." - Capt. Andi Taylor, BCSO
