Reviews

As a 16-year-old, I encourage you to read this book because it might help save your life. Although I have never had an encounter with the police, I encourage those who have had unfortunate encounters, to read it. This book may have helped to save the lives of those who have died because of police brutality. Walter J. Nelson Jr., Junior at Gilbert High School, Gilbert, SC This exceptionally relative book is a must read for parents, grandparents, mentors and anyone concerned about keeping children safe and alive, especially young black males. Throughout the book, the mother gives her son clear instructions on how to stay safe and alive, should he find himself in a situation with the police.
The love the mother displays toward her son in this book is very moving, as she pleads with him to hold his hands up and come home alive!
This book can be used in so many ways, especially as an ice breaker before starting a discussion about the controversial topic of conflict between black males and the police.
Although it is a picture book, the topic is so relevant and the messages are so strong that the book can be used with young children and teens alike. If you are unsure of how to start a conversation with your child, youth group, or students, get the book, read the story to them and start talking!
As an educator and the mother of two young men, I believe some of the most important things we can do for our children are to give them the tools they need to survive and show them we love them. We also need to keep the lines of communication open with our children. If they can't talk to us, who are they going to talk to? We need to have those tough controversial conversations with them and let them know the most important things are to do what's right, stay safe and come home alive! This book demonstrates all of those elements.
I highly recommend this book for all ages, and especially those who are concerned about the welfare of young black males! Wanda Brown, Mother and educator, Columbia, SC
