Joanne Rowling was born on 31st July 1965 and wrote her first book
at the age of six - a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. After
studying French and Classics at university, J.K. Rowling first had
the idea for Harry Potter while on a delayed train travelling from
Manchester to London King's Cross in 1990. As a single-mum, she
continued to write in every spare moment she could find until Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published by Bloomsbury in
1997. It quickly became a bestseller and the Harry Potter books
have since broken many records. The series has sold over 500
million copies, been translated into 80 languages, and made into
eight blockbuster films. In 2012, J.K. Rowling's digital company
Pottermore was launched, where fans can enjoy news, features and
articles, as well as original content from J.K. Rowling. She has
received many awards and honours, including an OBE and Companion of
Honour, France's Legion d'honneur, and the Hans Christian Andersen
Award.
