A wonderful, classic le Carre now reissued in a stunning new package.
John le Carre was born in 1931. His third novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, secured him a wide reputation which was consolidated by the acclaim for his trilogy Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley,s People. His other novels include The Constant Gardener, Absolute Friends and The Mission Song. A Most Wanted Man is his twentieth novel.
His command of detail is staggering, his straightforward, unaffected prose is superb. In short, wonderful value. - Sunday TimesSimply the world's greatest fictional spymaster. - NewsweekEnergy, compassion, rich and overwhelming sweep of character and action . . . one of the finest English novels of the seventies - The Times
In the centerpiece of le Carre's "Karla Trilogy," spymaster George Smiley sends Jerry Westerby, a journalist and sometime spook, to Hong Kong to look into a money--laundering scheme possibly masterminded by Karla, Smiley's Soviet nemesis. Westerby, a minor character in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the trilogy's first leg, is more flawed than usual for le Carre's heroes-his romantic recklessness constantly puts him in danger. VERDICT This title is crammed with eccentrics whose bumbling exploits are perfect for Michael Jayston's delivery, which is full of ironic inflections. Another outstanding production of a le Carre masterpiece. [The Knopf hc was a New York Times best seller.-Ed.]-Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr. Lib. (c) Copyright 2012.
