This text is the first to examine the influence of William Morris on the artistic, literary and ideological styles of Tennyson, Swinburne, Gissing, and Yeats. This book focuses on a selection of Morris' writings (lectures, short stories, poems and romances) and situates them in the fields of art, culture and society. Through Roland Barthes' notion of the pleasure of the text the author demonstrates that Tennyson, Swinburne, Gissing, and Yeats were active readers of Morris' works, "texts of bliss" which not only stimulated their writing but also infused them with desire, which destabilised and unsettled their artistic and cultural assumptions.
