Hysterical Rhymes and How You can Rhyme Too by Derek Taylor Kent is
a very special book. The author not only shares his poems but
explains the how-to behind poetry. From such hilarious poems as
'The Hairy Beast' to a deep look into current events such as
'Pandemic' there is a wide variety. This book is also a teaching
tool where you can learn about how poems are created, their
meaning, and much more. It teaches the fundamentals of poetry
enjoyably and interestingly. Poems are not always about happiness
and don't always rhyme, and that is all right. The limericks are
very funny and make you want to come up with your own. This book is
a must-read for any child who is interested in poetry and wants to
learn more.
Hysterical Rhymes and How You can Rhyme Too by Derek Taylor Kent is
wonderful. The illustrations and the whole idea of rhyming and
limericks were a treat to read. I loved the poem 'Wonderfully
Weird' as it represents self-acceptance and liking yourself for who
you are. The illustrations keep it all together in a neat package
and his advice is well worth reading. He mentions drawing
inspiration from people, things, and places and shows you how you
can write about anything. The illustrations by Travis Hanson were a
delight. His technique is reminiscent of the old comic book style,
which suits this book perfectly. They were funny and endearing.
Every poem has its unique drawing to focus attention on the words.
Capturing every idea in a single drawing in itself is an art and he
achieved this beyond expectation. This book is worth the read if
you want your child to learn more about poetry and limericks.
