Eli Yassif is professor emeritus of Hebrew literature and Jewish folklore at Tel-Aviv University. He is the author of many books and scholarly articles in the field of the Hebrew story in the Middle Ages and the history of Jewish folklore. His book The Hebrew Folktale: History, Genre, Meaning won the National Jewish Book Award in 2000 and became the standard textbook for the study of Jewish folk-narratives.
In this fascinating book Yassif paints a broad canvas of the inner
lives of the heroes of Safed in its glorious days. Dreams of
grandeur and tears of despair, spiritual visions and corporal
ailments, messianic ambitions and mundane defeats are entwined in
The Legend of Safed as they were in the souls and lives of its
protagonists.--Yuval Harari "Ben Gurion University of the
Negev"
Safed is known to be an intriguing town--heightened spirituality
mingled with hectic economic activity. But in his meticulous
research, Yassif leads us to see another angle of the town's
history--one where worries, envy, despair, and other negative
feelings live alongside hope for a utopia--all of which are cloaked
in literature and transformed into vivid legends.--Ronit Meroz
