Gr 2-4-In this sequel to Little Wolf's Book of Badness (1999) and Little Wolf's Diary of Daring Deeds (2000, both Carolrhoda), the feisty cub once again charms young audiences. Little Wolf; his cousin and best friend, Yeller; his little brother, Smellybreff; and their friend Stubbs Crow are opening Haunted Hall, "THE BEST SCHOOL FOR BRUTE BEASTS." When Little asks the ghost of his late uncle, Bigbad Wolf, to star as the School Spirit and resident spook, the deceased villain bets his nephew that he can't find a student brave enough to stand up to him for five minutes. If Little Wolf loses the bet, Uncle will return to his grave forever; if he wins, Bigbad promises to retrieve his nephew's gold, which was scattered all over Frettnin Forest in a previous book. Normus, a fearless cub, meets the challenge, but before Uncle can pay up, Mister Twister, a sinister fox, steals him. In the end, Haunted Hall has closed its doors, but Little Wolf and company have opened the Yelloweyes Forest Detective Agency. The author continues the series style of Little Wolf writing to his parents, and some handwritten or crossed-out words, blobs of ink, and phonetic misspellings mimic the look of child-written letters. Ross's amusing cartoons perfectly complement the humorous text. Fans of the series will enjoy the further adventures of these characters, and newcomers will have no trouble following the story.-Marilyn Ackerman, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
