Paul McClean grew up in Ireland where he attended the Dublin
Institute of Technology, graduating with honours in architecture in
1994. During this time he travelled and worked for award-winning
architectural practices in London, Dublin, and Sydney. After
graduation he arrived in Southern California and worked for various
local architectural firms before establishing McClean Design in
2000. McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects
and works primarily in California and Hawaii.
Philip Jodidio was born in New Jersey in 1954. He studied
art history and economics at Harvard before moving to Paris, where
he was editor in chief of the French art monthly Connaissance des
Arts from 1980 to 2002. Jodidio has written over 90 books about
contemporary architecture and art including Tadao Ando: Venice,
Tadao Ando at Naoshima, Tadao Ando Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth,
and I. M. Pei: The Complete Works for Rizzoli.
"What I love about the book is that he explains his process,
including working with clients, city building regulations and
restrictions, the evolution of the project, and what the
ultimate focal point is. I didn’t realize how restrictive certain
areas are in the Hollywood Hills when it comes to building
guidelines, but it makes sense because no one wants to lose their
multimillion dollar view." —WHERE ART INSPIRES BEAUTY
"We try to create spaces that are uplifting but do not dominate,
strong enough to engage with the site and the landscape, but quiet
enough not to get in the way of everyday life," as McClean notes in
McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary House, a cool new coffee
table book out this week from Rizzoli and now available on Amazon."

"In his new book, McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary
House, the Irish-born architect takes us behind the scenes of
twenty-four of his ultra-modern homes completed in the past fifteen
years. The reader is granted access to McClean’s vision for each
project, from design strategies to sketches. McClean’s stunningly
luxurious homes grace every page of this 240-page book, allowing
readers to be swept into a world of not only sleek contemporary
architecture, but also of lavish features such as champagne vaults,
wine cellars, cigar rooms and movie theaters." —FORM: PIONEERING
