PreS-Gr 1-Newton, an adorable teddy bear, is having a troublesome night. He hears scary noises, and the creaking, flapping, splashing, and rumbling lead to nighttime adventures. Reassuring his toy friends, he bravely tiptoes to the unknown with each new sound, although one time he takes Snappy the alligator along "just in case" and another time, "for company." When the sources of the disturbing sounds are found to be only a closet door, the bedroom curtains, the bathroom faucet, and the bear's own tummy, Newton opines, "There's always an explanation for everything," and goes to sleep. The colored-pencil illustrations are fresh and original and work well with the text. A reassuring story for bedtime and storytime.-Karen J.
