This collection of 12 essays by contemporary academic philosophers aims to assay the current state of American philosophy and to prognosticate its future. The emphasis is on the work and thought of Peirce, James, Santayana, and Dewey, but the thinking of George Herbert Mead, Justus Buchler, and Josiah Royce, among others, is also examined. The main focus is Pragmatism‘the distinctively American philosophical orientation‘which entails discussions of many of the main elements of philosophical concern, such as the validity of knowledge, semiotics, philosophy of language, and metaphysics. The essays, though by no means elementary, are perspicuously written and should be accessible to the nonspecialist. With the recent renewal of interest in Pragmatism owing to the work of Richard Rorty, this work should find a welcome audience in academia.‘Leon H. Brody, U.S. Office of Personnel Mgt.
