About the Author

Lynne Young is an Associate Professor in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Her past research has focused primarily on discourse analysis within the model of Systemic Functional Grammar, an area in which she has published a book and several articles. More recently she has been working in the field of critical discourse analysis, using the SFL model to examine issues of racism in the Canadian media. She has also been investigating the discursive role of social change in governmental institutions. Brigid Fitzgerald is a curriculum designer, materials writer and language training consultant. She has published a number of textbooks in the areas of English for academic purposes, general English, and workplace communication. She currently teaches English workplace writing on-line for the Canadian Foreign Service Institute.
