Charles Coleman is currently the Senior Executive for IBM's Global Health and Life Sciences Division specializing in "Smarter Planet" initiatives in clinical quality outcomes, clinical research, and bio-medical informatics and analytics. Before coming to IBM, Charles served as Senior Managing Director for SAS Institute's (Cary, NC) Higher Education and Academic Medical Centers Practice. Charles is Associate Adjunct Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC); Adjunct Assistant Professor, Health Policy & Management, Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Public Health, UNC; Founding Member and Board of Directors, Institute for Advanced Analytics, North Carolina State University (NCSU); Adjunct Professor, College of Engineering and Department of Computer Science, NCSU; Board of Visitors, School of Information and Library Sciences, UNC; Senior Visiting Scholar, UNC; Member, Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP); founding chair of the RTP Analytics Roundtable in Healthcare; Board Member North Carolina Healthcare Alliance (NCHQA). Charles received his doctoral degree from SUNY Binghamton in 1977 for his Distinguished Dissertation-a graphic, psychological portrayal of combat-related post-traumatic stress syndrome/disorder among Vietnam War veterans-which was published by Harper & Row in 1980 under the title, Sergeant Back Again, recently re-released under the title Sergeant Back Again-The Anthology of Critical and Clinical Commentary, Volume 1. Sergeant Back Again is internationally recognized as the very first rendering of what would emerge to become the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) and, later, as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cited by literary critic, Vietnam Veteran and author, Philip Beidler, as "The Vietnam Novel that Made PTSD Real!" Following his graduation from SUNY-Binghamton, Charles accepted an appointment in 1978 at Southeastern Massachusetts University (now U-Mass Dartmouth) serving as the Board-of-Trustees-appointed Sr. Grants and Contracts Administrator for a Department of Health & Human Services Title XX De-Institutionalization & Psychiatric Outreach Program for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Charles is an author and lecturer on the subject of PTSD and is currently compiling a series of international use cases as an introduction to the universality of post-traumatic stress on and off the battlefield.
