About the Author

Not often does the world hear from Nantucket--except, during summer months, while steamboats from the mainland are carrying pleasure-seekers to the island, and bringing them away. Its history stopped nearly half a century ago; when prosperity had departed, and new men and new manners began to take the places of the old. It is to preserve its former life from oblivion that I have written the book. Originally published in 1896.
