About the Author

Joel Lobenthal has written biographies of Tallulah Bankhead, Alla Osipenko, and Patricia Wilde. He lives in New York City. Lisa Whitaker, the great-niece of French writer Geo London, is a graduate in Russian Studies of the University of Melbourne, Australia. A retired nonprofit CEO, she serves on several nonprofit boards, including the Russian Cultural Center in Houston, Texas.

Red Star White Nights is so much more than the life and death of Yuri Soloviev. It is the tale of the Kirov Ballet supernova who leaped into the world's attention in the same year and from the same corps as Rudolf Nureyev-and, in the eyes of many, Nureyev's superior-but who did not defect to the West. This is the tale of the man who stayed: an artist, a patriot, and a loving father who was crushed by the implacable demands of a Party he refused to join. It is the tale of an artist's struggle to remain true to the purity of his form and his craft even as the system he is in uses that very purity as an example of the greatness of a regime he does not wish to personify. Utterly absorbing, Whitaker and Lobenthal's work resurrects the memory and achievement of a man made invisible by the State after his death, at the same time renders palpable the anguish of an artist with a gift; a gift he wants to give away freely, beautifully to the world-and cannot."-- SARAH BLAKE, author of the New York Times bestseller THE GUEST BOOK
"Yuri Soloviev, the best ballet dancer you've never heard of. . . .an eloquent biography. . .deft, swift, deep, and knowing. . .Lobenthal and Whitaker build a world around their subject."--Laura Jacobs, Air Mail
