Rex Stout (1886-1975) wrote dozens of short stories, novellas, and full-length mystery novels, most featuring his two indelible characters, the peerless detective Nero Wolfe and his handy sidekick, Archie Goodwin.
A beautiful young heiress becomes engaged to a black coworker; his father disapproves and approaches detective Nero Wolfe with the arduous job of finding something unpleasant about this white girl so the interracial marriage will be called off. During the investigation, the girl is murdered, and her fianc? is the prime suspect. Nero believes the man is innocent, so he and his legman, Archie, work to prove his innocence in this tale of thwarted romance, murder, and intrigue set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement. Michael Prichard's well-paced reading does justice to the classic give-and-take between Archie and Nero. Recommended.-Denise A.
